Steven Miller: It Gets Better
Much has already been said about the It Gets Better Project, Dan Savage’s YouTube channel aimed at LGBT youth. Created in response to the suicide of Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi after being outed by bullies on the Internet (as well as a slew of similar tragedies), It Gets Better has already encouraged hundreds of adults to share stories of transcending schoolyard suffering in an effort to provide a window of outreach to gay kids who have traditionally lacked positive role models. My favorite so far is by Seattle photographer Steven Miller, whose work I have previously discussed here.
I don’t know how many kids are actually watching these videos, but it certainly seems to me that the sharing of these frank, confessional monologues has immense therapeutic potential for adults as well as teens. (Watch more here.)
